FAQs

What kind of projects will be sparked by Crossover? Are we talking interactive TV programmes, games, web sites, or what?

The projects that come out of Crossover will be delivered across various platforms. It's likely that one or more of the projects that come out of each lab will be web-based and possible that some projects will resemble games, or at least be structured like games. But the projects that emerge from Crossover will vary in their final presentation as the projects will be determined by the teams and the brainstorming processes.

Crossover is not placing any limitations on the platform that will support the projects or on the devices that will be used to "experience" them. Our only criteria are that projects to be developed in the lab engage multiple participants in an immersive, interactive, participatory experience. The project creators will structure the experience, and the participants will enliven it.

What will I get out of participating in Crossover?

Crossover brings talented, responsive individuals together and offers pathways into an understanding of how linear and non linear production skills can be combined to produce ground breaking programmes and projects. Participants in Crossover are selected to maximise the potential for sharing across industry sectors.  The aim of Crossover is to foster new relationships across sectors which can opens up new creative and business opportunities.

Who will own the projects that get developed through Crossover?

The Producers will own their own projects, the IP of all projects that come out of the brainstorming process at the Lab is collectively owned by the Crossover participants.

Can other kinds of artists/creators/producers apply besides film/video and new media makers?

We encourage producers from many disciplines including

Is there any special knowledge base required to participate?

Crossover aims to bring together experienced creative professionals from a range of sectors. We expect the applicants and actual participants in Crossover to have industry credits. The mix will include people with experience that covers filmmaking, new media design, games development, theatre, programming and other disciplines. Crossover is focused on idea generation and concept development and less on technical project implementation, so our baseline for applicant's technical facility is relatively low.

Can I send work as part of the application?

Not right away. You can provide a URL on the application, but if your work is something that needs to be sent (like a tape, a CD-ROM or a digital file), we will ask applicants to submit work only if it is required during the review process.

Who makes the participant selections?

A committee will select participants for each Crossover. The committee for each Crossover is based on the focus of each Lab.

Testimonials from past participants

“very inspiring, I left buzzing with ideas. It was also great to share the experience with highly experienced filmmakers/commissioners/ and new media people. A very creative experience.”

Georgie Weedon, Al Jazeera.

“I attended the courses with very few expectations. On the first few days of the lab I was completely pushed outside my comfort zone as I was exposed to new information and new ways of thinking. These new skills were put to great practical advantage as the week unfolded. It was an amazing journey.”

Kathryn Penny, Mezzo Films

“Labs are a fantastic format for getting different creative minds to think, explore and collaborate on new ideas. The world of cross- platform content and distribution demands a range of skills from technical, creative, artistic and business contexts. Crossover is a perfect environment for talent to get together and really understand how creativity works in each others’ fields. I’ve found the Lab format the most effective and productive way of identifying and developing new ideas from cross-platform teams, and its a format we will be using more at Channel 4 as part of our cross- platform strategy.”

Matt Locke, Commissioning Editor, Channel 4
